Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a two-day state visit to Bhutan, receiving a heartfelt reception, as Bhutanese citizens adorned the 45-kilometer journey from Paro International Airport to Thimphu with Indian and Bhutanese flags, celebrating the strengthening of ties under India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ Policy. Upon his arrival at Paro airport, PM Modi was greeted with a ceremonial welcome, including a red carpet, by Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.

This visit underscores the ongoing high-level exchanges between India and Bhutan, emphasizing India’s commitment to its Neighbourhood First Policy, as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The Bhutanese Prime Minister welcomed Modi on X in Hindi, expressing honor and brotherhood.

PM Modi, sharing his anticipation for the visit on X, looked forward to enhancing the India-Bhutan partnership through various programs and discussions with Bhutanese royalty and the Prime Minister.

Despite a slight delay due to adverse weather conditions, PM Modi arrived in Bhutan on March 22, 2024, for a significant 24-hour visit. He was honored with the Guard of Honour and is set to receive Bhutan’s highest civilian award, the Order of the Druk Gyalpo, from King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. This award recognizes Modi’s efforts in fortifying India-Bhutan relations, notably India’s donation of 500,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccines in 2021, marking this visit as a pivotal moment in the friendship between the two nations.
